J-ENG launches development of methanol-fuelled engine

Japan Engine Corporation (J-ENG) has started developing a methanol-fuelled marine engine, designated UEC50LSJM.

The initiative comes after the company completed its first ammonia-fuelled engine, the 7UEC50LSJA, in August 2025.

J-ENG is also currently engaged in the development of a hydrogen-fuelled engine, named 6UEC35LSGH.

The company aims to complete the methanol-fuelled engine within the 2027 fiscal year, using expertise gained from these fuel engine projects to expedite the process.

Methanol, which remains liquid at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, is considered simpler to handle compared to some other alternative fuels.

It is being evaluated for use in various ship types, including those of medium and small size.

The company identified methanol as a potential alternative fuel because it can reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as emissions of sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and particulate matter.

J-ENG noted that future supplies of green methanol, produced from biomass and renewable energy sources, may further cut greenhouse gas emissions within the shipping sector.

The company said that it would continue efforts to develop and introduce engines using next-generation fuels, with an intention to support Japan’s shipping and shipbuilding industries.

It also said these steps are part of its contribution towards reducing GHG emissions in shipping and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

In October, a consortium of Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Yanmar Power Solutions, and J-ENG conducted what is claimed as the world’s first land-based test operation of marine hydrogen engines.

The demonstration was held at J-ENG’s headquarters factory, using a newly installed liquefied hydrogen fuel supply system.
