The towed suction dredger Strandway, from Boskalis, has been standing out for its recurring presence in the Port of Rotterdam. In addition to maintenance and area recovery work, the vessel also plays a strategic role in the rapid response to oil spills, reinforcing environmental protection in the region.
Boskalis maintains an almost permanent presence along the Dutch coast with its Causeway, Freeway, Shoalway and Strandway towed suction dredgers, working to replenish beaches and protect the coastline against the effects of climate change. These operations extend from Zealandia, in the south of the country, to the West Frisian Islands, in the north, ensuring the resilience of the coastal strip throughout the year.

Among these vessels, Strandway stands out for breaking the coastal routine and establishing an increasingly close relationship with the port city of Rotterdam. In recent years, the dredger has carried out long-term maintenance dredging in the port’s navigation channels, as well as participating in the land reclamation project in Rijnhaven, one of the city’s transforming urban areas.
More recently, Strandway was active in the Maasmond region, where it carried out silt removal from the navigation channels leading to the Port of Rotterdam. This type of operation is essential to guarantee the safety of navigation and the logistical efficiency of the largest port complex in Europe.
Although Rotterdam became a recurring point of operation, the vessel also operated in other locations along the Dutch coast, such as Ameland and Vlissingen, as well as international projects in Emden, Germany, and Southsea, in the Portsmouth region, in the United Kingdom.
An important differentiator of Strandway is its configuration with specialized equipment for rapid response to oil spills. This capacity allows Boskalis to act immediately in environmental emergencies at the port, helping to contain damage and reduce impacts on the local ecosystem.
With continued operations in the North Sea, Boskalis’ four towed suction dredgers should continue to be a frequent presence in the region in the coming years. And, it seems, Strandway will continue to reappear regularly in Rotterdam’s urban and port landscape, consolidating a relationship that goes beyond conventional dredging.
