Taiwanese shipowner Yang Ming marked in Ulsan, South Korea, the christening of two new dual-fuel LNG container ships, the YM Willpower and the YM Worthiness, which represent the first units of a new series with 15,500 TEU.
The shipowner frames this investment within its commitment to sustainability, highlighting that the use of LNG will allow an immediate reduction in emissions of around 20%, in addition to positioning Yang Ming as the first Taiwanese carrier to operate container ships with this type of propulsion. According to the information released, the ships incorporate state-of-the-art dual-fuel engines, aimed at more efficient operation and with a smaller environmental footprint, and also include advanced “Smart Ship” systems, designed to reinforce safety and optimize performance on the journey, through digital and monitoring solutions.
The operational debut of YM Willpower is scheduled for February 8, the date on which it joins the MD2 service, connecting Asia to the Mediterranean. The ceremony was attended by the ship’s godmother, Yu-Fen Li, and brought together entities and partners associated with the project, in an initiative that Yang Ming classifies as a milestone in the process of modernizing its fleet and adapting to the environmental demands that intensify in international maritime transport.
