The Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor) completed the installation of an Automated Altitude Meteorological Station (EMA-A) at Barcelos airport. The investment of R$4.8 million is part of the portfolio of projects aimed at strengthening infrastructure and aviation security at regional airports in the country.

“We are investing in technology and infrastructure to ensure greater safety for air operations and expand the integration of the Amazon region with the rest of the country. Improving the structure of regional airports means strengthening tourism, stimulating the local economy and ensuring greater quality in the services provided to the population”, explained the Minister of Ports and Airports, Sílvio Costa Filho.
EMA-A are systems used to collect and process meteorological data from the atmosphere, such as temperature, humidity and pressure. The information is obtained through a radiosonde attached to a meteorological balloon that is launched and sends data during the ascent, allowing the analysis of atmospheric conditions from the surface to higher layers of the atmosphere.
The main objective of the equipment is to improve meteorological analysis, surveillance and weather forecasting services in the areas of Flight Information Regions. The technology is especially important in regions where permanent access for technical teams is limited, contributing to increasing the safety and reliability of air operations.
Another difference between the stations is the automated system for launching meteorological balloons. The technology allows continuous operation even in remote and difficult-to-access locations, a fundamental feature for the Amazon region, where geographic and climatic conditions can make traditional meteorological monitoring difficult.
Located around 400 kilometers from Manaus, Barcelos airport plays a strategic role in mobility in the region. The terminal mainly serves regional flights and is an important gateway to the municipality, which stands out for nature tourism.
Barcelos is internationally recognized as one of the main sport fishing destinations for peacock bass in the Amazon, an activity that attracts visitors from Brazil and abroad. Improving airport infrastructure and air navigation support systems contributes to strengthening tourism, expanding connectivity and supporting the region’s economic development.
