According to information from the Santos Port Authority, the Operations Directorate (Diop) was called to check the vessel, which began to tilt towards the pier wall.

The ship belongs to the Instituto do Mar and temporarily occupies a space provided in the area while awaiting action from the owners for possible restoration.

Emergency teams from the port authority were at the scene and found that the incident did not pose a risk to navigation in the port’s access channel.

As a preventive measure, the vessel’s moorings were reinforced, preventing any possibility of movement towards the port channel.

In addition, an environmental containment fence was installed in the area as a security measure. According to the port authority, the action was taken preventively, as the ship had previously gone through a complete process of removing oil and other waste.

The Port Guard maintains permanent surveillance at the site to prevent people from trying to access the vessel, which could pose a risk due to the ship’s inclination.

The Port Authority was also informed about the incident and is monitoring the situation. According to the Operations Directorate, all appropriate measures were adopted and there is no risk to navigation in the Port of Santos.

The Professor Besnard is considered one of the most emblematic ships in Brazilian oceanographic research, having participated over the decades in several scientific expeditions focused on the study of the seas and marine biodiversity.
