The action was carried out by the Judiciary Police, with support from the Navy and Air Force, as part of an operation to combat drug trafficking on the high seas. The vessel was located several hundred miles from the Azores and was carrying eight crew members, of different nationalities. The drug was hidden on board, confirming the continued use of fishing vessels as cover for illicit operations in the Atlantic space.
After interception, the vessel was sent to the Azores, where investigation and evidence collection continued. The case also involved international cooperation, in a sign that combating maritime trafficking increasingly requires coordination between authorities from several countries. More than a major seizure, this operation shows how the Atlantic continues to be a sensitive route in transnational drug trafficking. It also once again demonstrates the importance of maritime surveillance, open sea interception capacity and coordination between naval, air and police assets.
