Berlin Airport Was Temporarily Closed for Security Reasons

Operations at Berlin Brandenburg international airport were temporarily suspended on the evening of March 11, following the sighting of an unidentified flying object in the area.

There were no takeoffs or landings between 6.40 p.m. and 7.18 p.m. local time on March 11, Berlin airport said in an emailed statement, adding that this was a “routine procedure.” Flight operations have resumed in the meantime, it said.

Several airports across Europe, including Berlin, Munich, Oslo and Copenhagen, faced disruptions in recent months after suspected drone sightings. Officials have warned of sophisticated operators and called for stricter security measures.

Germany’s interior ministry in December launched a new drone unit to protect critical infrastructure such as airports, and said it will open a Joint Drone Defense Center, which will coordinate the work of state and federal police forces and the Bundeswehr to assess threats and guide technology development.
