Airlines Prepare for Cargo Shift to Navi Mumbai Airport

Airlines are preparing to shift freighter operations from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai airport as dedicated cargo services are set to be temporarily moved during work at Mumbai International Airport. International passenger services at Navi Mumbai airport are also expected to begin from July 15, starting with Air India Express’s Abu Dhabi flight.

Transition Plans Take Shape

Air France, which operates two weekly freighter flights between Paris and Mumbai, has said the transfer is currently planned for August 1, subject to approvals. Lufthansa Cargo has also said it is in discussion with authorities and stakeholders as operational details are being worked out.

Mumbai Cargo Suspension

Mumbai International Airport Ltd had earlier informed airlines that dedicated freighter operations may be suspended from August 2026 to May 2027 for airside improvement works. The plan does not affect belly cargo carried on passenger aircraft, which will continue to operate normally.

Cargo Hub Shift

The move is expected to redirect part of Mumbai’s cargo traffic to Navi Mumbai airport, which has been positioning itself for cargo and international passenger operations. Industry tracking has also noted that the transition is being driven by the temporary suspension of standalone freighter flights in Mumbai.
