Deutsche Bahn (DB) has opened a new 38,000-square-metre container depot in Ulm-Dornstadt, expanding capacity for intermodal freight transport in southern Germany.

The new facility adds storage space equivalent to more than five football pitches.

DB said the expansion will provide additional storage for both loaded and empty containers. It will also strengthen combined rail and road transport while improving supply chain resilience.

The company completed the project in less than nine months.

Shipping lines, freight forwarders and regional cargo owners are already using the expanded depot.

The additional capacity gives customers greater flexibility when collecting and delivering containers. It also reduces the risk of bottlenecks across logistics chains.

Ralf-Günter Kloß, Member of the Management Board for Combined Transport at DB Cargo, said the new depot creates capacity for future cargo volumes while making logistics more predictable for customers.

The project follows the ongoing expansion of the Ulm-Dornstadt intermodal terminal.

DB plans to more than double the terminal’s handling capacity by 2028, enabling higher volumes of freight to move between road and rail.

Together, the container depot and intermodal terminal will serve as a key logistics hub, linking the region to major European freight corridors.

The depot is operated by DB Intermodal Services, a subsidiary of DB Cargo that specializes in container depots, storage, repairs and intermodal logistics services.
