Maersk warns of navigation restrictions during dry period in the Amazon

Maersk issued a statement warning about the possibility of new restrictions on navigation in the Amazon region during the dry period, which will take place between October 2026 and the beginning of 2027.

The company bases this forecast on the Initial Communiqué on the 2026 Drought Period, published on July 14 by the Western Amazon River Captaincy, in addition to data from the National Water Agency (ANA) measuring stations and the company’s own predictive analyses.

According to the shipowner, the process will take place in stages. “Our forecast indicates a possible draft restriction between weeks 41 and 44 (October), followed by the closure of the river between weeks 45 and 48 (November). Subsequently, draft restrictions are expected to be resumed between weeks 49 and 53 (December)”, declared the maritime giant.

The multinational reported that if the drought materializes, the impacts could be felt in its operations, generating logistical limitations, reduced ship capacity and increased costs. If the drought worsens, causing the river to be closed and the need to operate using floating piers, this could affect freight rates during the period and require the application of an additional surcharge.

The logistics operator reiterates that it constantly monitors hydrological conditions and will keep its customers informed of any changes in the situation.
