TotalEnergies, BluEnergies enhancing Liberia’s oil & gas offshore exploration prospects

A Liberian upstream subsidiary of France’s energy giant TotalEnergies (TTE) and BluEnergies (BLU), a Canadian-based international oil and gas exploration and development company with a focus on operations in West Africa, are conducting a work program to confirm and advance drillable prospects in the Harper Basin, off the coast of Liberia.

BluEnergies and TotalEnergies are carrying out a work program on the LB-26, LB-30, and LB-31 blocks in the Harper Basin to reaffirm and enhance drillable prospects within these blocks. The activities are said to be underway on schedule and comprise the reprocessing of the 6,167 square kilometers of 3D seismic data, which TGS is in charge of conducting, with over 50% complete and preliminary results to date.

The primary goal of the data reprocessing is to enhance the seismic character/definition and the AVO content of the original 3D seismic survey completed by the same firm in 2013. GeoPartners is conducting within the blocks a multi-beam echo sounder survey (MBES), comprising an area of 4,045 square kilometers in water depths ranging from 500 to 3,500 meters.

The company is utilizing the R/V Gyre vessel owned and operated by TDI-Brooks. This data acquisition began on June 19, 2026, with expected completion in 3Q 2026, allowing for early integration into a refined 3D seismic data interpretation. The MBES is designed to map underwater terrain, aiding in identifying sea bottom anomalies, supporting the safe selection of future drilling locations.

Sergio LauraBluEnergies’ VP of Exploration, commented: “The West Africa Transform Margin, where the Harper basin is located, and its conjugate South American Margin are regions where basin floor fan plays are being actively and successfully explored, developed and produced.

“The recent, hectic activity by major oil companies in securing licenses for deepwater acreage along the entire Africa west margin is confirmation that the early move by BluEnergies in the Harper basin (2023) was a valid one. The Jubilee field in Ghana, the Venus field in Namibia, and the recent discoveries offshore Cote d’Ivoire have proven the significance of basin floor fan plays along the African margin.”

BluEnergies elaborates that the MBES identifies seabed geomorphologies, the presence of anomalous features, and performs water column imaging for the detection of anomalies related to seepage of hydrocarbons through the sea bottom. The seabed geochemical sampling is conducted through piston coring to collect evidence of migrated mature hydrocarbons.

In addition, the heat flow measurements are being performed to collect information about the relative sediment temperature and the thermal history of the undrilled Harper basin. This project is expected to be completed by 4Q 2026, allowing for the integration of the data into a refined 3D data re-interpretation of the numerous leads within the blocks.

The Canadian firm emphasizes that all these program initiatives focus on identifying drillable prospects and assisting in the selection of optimal drilling locations. The West Africa Transform Margin, where the Harper Basin is situated, and its conjugate South American Margin are portrayed as regions where the basin floor fan play is being actively explored, developed, and produced.
