Maersk upgrades reefer fleet with next-generation IoT technology

Maersk has begun rolling out a new generation of Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity devices across its refrigerated container (reefer) fleet to enhance cargo visibility and cold chain performance.

The carrier plans to equip all of its reefer containers with the new devices over the coming years, following the ongoing deployment of a new digital connectivity platform across 450 vessels.

According to Maersk, the upgrade will provide customers with a more reliable flow of real-time data throughout the container journey while standardizing connectivity technology across the reefer fleet.

The company said the new devices will also strengthen its Captain Peter visibility solution, introduced in 2019, by improving data availability and paving the way for new intelligent features that will help customers interpret cargo data and receive recommended actions.

Maersk said the investment forms part of its broader digitalization strategy, aiming to improve cargo tracking, management and customer experience for temperature-sensitive shipments.
