The UK-flagged research vessel Prince Madog has become the first sea‑going, crewed vessel to receive certification for a hydrogen fuel cell retrofit, marking a significant step forward for clean maritime technology.
Lloyd’s Register (LR) awarded the certification under its ShipRight risk-based certification (RBC) framework during a presentation at Seaworks 2026 in Southampton on 10 June. The retrofit project is being delivered by vessel owner O.S. Energy, working in partnership with clean energy systems specialist Ecomar Propulsion.
The work has focused on integrating a gaseous hydrogen storage system alongside fuel cells, batteries and supporting onboard systems. LR confirmed the design had already received Approval in Principle, recognising that the installation meets safety and class requirements.
The ShipRight RBC framework enables innovative technologies to be assessed outside traditional regulations, ensuring safety while supporting development. The project has also received backing from the UK Government’s Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition.
Industry figures have hailed the milestone as a breakthrough for hydrogen propulsion. Project leaders say the retrofit will demonstrate zero‑emission operation and help pave the way for wider adoption of hydrogen systems across workboats and commercial shipping, supporting the maritime sector’s transition to net zero by 2050.
The UK‑flagged research vessel Prince Madog is a modern coastal research ship of around 35m in length, equipped with advanced survey and laboratory facilities, and primarily operates in UK and near‑European waters to support marine science, environmental monitoring, and offshore research projects.
