Andhra Pradesh Pushes Maritime Investment

Andhra Pradesh has invited South Korean maritime manufacturers to invest in the proposed ₹30,000 crore Dugarajapatnam shipbuilding cluster, aiming to build a major industrial base for shipbuilding and related maritime activities. The project is positioned as a significant step in expanding India’s domestic shipbuilding capacity and strengthening the state’s maritime ecosystem.

Mega Cluster And Dugarajapatnam

The proposed cluster at Dugarajapatnam is expected to become a large-scale shipbuilding and heavy industries hub with an estimated capacity of 1.2 million gross tonnage. Reports indicate that the project is part of a broader plan to support shipbuilding, repairs and allied maritime services, while also increasing the share of India-flagged vessels in the country’s fleet.

Centre Backing Project

The cluster has been under consideration by the Centre, with in-principle approval expected as part of efforts to accelerate shipbuilding infrastructure in India. Industry reports have linked the project to rising demand for vessels across government-backed stakeholders, highlighting the long-term procurement pipeline that could support domestic suppliers.

Strategic Maritime Focus

The Dugarajapatnam proposal fits into India’s wider push for maritime self-reliance, regional industrial growth and blue economy development. By courting Korean shipbuilding expertise, Andhra Pradesh appears to be signalling that it wants global partners to help build a competitive shipbuilding ecosystem on India’s east coast.
