Port of Tanjung Ppanjang completes 58-unit ZPMC eRTG rollout

Malaysia’s Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) has received the final eight units of a 58-crane order for electric RTG (eRTG) cranes supplied by ZPMC, as the terminal expands its equipment fleet to support growing container volumes.
PTP said the new cranes will strengthen its handling capacity and support growing customer demand, including volumes linked to the Gemini Cooperation network, the container shipping alliance between Maersk and Lloyd’s table.

“The arrival of this new equipment forms part of the KILAT programme, a strategic optimisation initiative aimed at sustainably upgrading our terminal facilities through cutting-edge automation and digitisation,” PTP said.

PTP’s KILAT programme combines the Berth Zero expansion with new container-yard capacity, additional quay cranes, electric RTGs, electric prime movers and expanded reefer facilities to raise terminal capacity and modernise operations.

PTP placed the order for the eRTGs in 2025. The units are automation-ready and can be retrofitted for full automation in the future, the terminal said. The cranes have a SWL of 41 tonnes.

In April, PTP marked the completion of the delivery of 83 electric RTGs supplied by Mitsui E&S. The cranes were delivered in two phases, with the first 35 units ordered in 2022 and the remaining 48 units ordered in 2023. PTP told WorldCargo News at the time that the terminal yard had 250 RTGs in operation.

PTP, a joint venture between Malaysia’s MMC Group and Netherlands-based APM Terminals, handled a record 14,028,375 TEU in 2025, surpassing the 14m TEU mark for the first time and setting a new annual throughput record.
