Shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd is launching a new rail connection linking three of England’s main ports with the Glasgow area in Scotland. Together with DB Cargo UK, PD Stirling and Newell & Wright, the service goes from Southampton, London Gateway and Felixstowe to Bellshill.
Trains will run three times per week, according to Hapag-Lloyd’s intermodal services manager Bruce Knowles. “A key advantage of the service is the ability to tranship cargo at our Rotherham hub”, he said on a LinkedIn post.
London Gateway and Southampton and the two main ports for Hapag-Lloyd in the UK, while Felixstowe faded away from the company’s network after the Gemini alliance with Maersk. This alliance is also one of the reasons why now most Hapag-Lloyd containers reach the UK via London Gateway. Southampton also plays a key role for UK export as it is the last port in Europe before the company’s vessels head back to Asia.
