The state of Alabama, USA, will now allow Sunday travel for abnormal loads, while South Carolina has expanded access to self-issue permits, according to the Specialized Carriers & Rigging Association (SC&RA). The Alabama change brings the state into line with the days and hours objective of the AASHTO/SC&RA Permit Harmonization campaign, which aims to improve consistency between states. SC&RA said the improvement comes amid broader permitting reforms in the state, where the association recently submitted comments on proposed changes involving permit procedures, escort requirements and emergency movements.

In South Carolina, carriers can now self-issue permits for qualifying loads up to 130,000 lb (59 tonnes) gross vehicle weight, 14 ft (4.27 m) wide, 15 ft (4.57 m) high and 100 ft (30.48 m) long. The maximum weight per axle is 20,000 lb (9.07 tonnes). Travel remains subject to permit conditions.

SC&RA said the changes follow sustained advocacy and give specialist carriers greater flexibility when planning journeys and responding to schedule changes.
