Latakia Port has taken delivery of six RTG cranes from Konecranes as CMA CGM steps up the modernisation of the Latakia International Container Terminal (LICT) in Syria.
The hybrid electric RTGs arrived at the Syrian Mediterranean port on October 22 and are part of the first phase of a wider investment programme to upgrade the terminal, reports Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA). The cranes are destined for LICT, which has been operated by CMA Terminals, the terminal operating arm of French shipping and logistics group CMA CGM, since 2009. CMA CGM signed a new 30-year concession with the Syrian authorities in May 2025, which includes a total investment of €230m.
The €30m first phase includes the delivery of new handling equipment and initial terminal upgrades. The €200m second phase will cover a new berth, terminal expansion, digitalisation and infrastructure improvements, with the aim of increasing capacity to 1m TEU a year by 2030. Latakia handles about 95% of Syria’s containerised imports and exports, serving Damascus and providing connections to northern Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Turkey and the Gulf.
According to LICT Director Faisal Hweilo, quoted by SANA, the new RTGs will allow containers to be stacked vertically and are expected to improve use of the terminal’s available space. He added that the terminal previously relied on straddle carriers for yard operations. The six cranes are reported to be worth more than €16m in total.
