Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dr Harini Amarasuriya recently inaugurated the US$ 750 million Phase II expansion of Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT), a joint venture between Adani Ports and Special Economic Zones, the John Keels Holdings Group and Sri Lanka Ports Authority. With annual container throughput capacity now doubled from 1.6 million to 3.2 million TEU, the expansion will further CWIT’s ambition to handle nearly 25% of the Port of Colombo’s total container throughput by 2028.
The increase in capacity was required as the terminal’s growth has outstripped initial projections, handling 2 million TEU within its first 18 months of operation. CWIT, Sri Lanka’s first fully automated container terminal, will now be able to simultaneously berth three large container vessels, strengthening Colombo’s position as a key transshipment hub on East-West trade routes.
