CWIT takes Sany electric tractor fleet past 100
Sany Marine has delivered 48 additional electric terminal tractors to Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT).
Sany Marine has delivered 48 additional electric terminal tractors to Colombo West International Terminal (CWIT), Sri Lanka’s first fully automated container terminal. According to Sany, the STT2500E3-D tractors have 282 kWh batteries and fast-charging capability. SANY said CWIT was a returning customer, having already supplied 62 electric terminal tractors for the terminal’s first development phase. The latest delivery brings CWIT’s fleet to 110 electric terminal tractors.
CWIT recently inaugurated the Phase 2 of its development, a US$750m investment that doubles annual capacity from 1.6m to 3.2m TEU. The expansion enables CWIT to handle three ultra-large container vessels simultaneously and is part of the terminal’s ambition to handle nearly 25% of the Port of Colombo’s 13m TEU target by 2028.
Located at the Port of Colombo, CWIT is a deepwater container terminal developed under a 35-year build-operate-transfer concession. Its shareholders are Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, with a 51% stake, John Keells Holdings with 34%, and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority with 15%.
The terminal began commercial operations in 2025. In March 2026, CWIT handled its one millionth TEU, becoming the fastest terminal in the region to mark the milestone. The record has been ascribed to the robust underlying demand at the Port of Colombo, which quickly absorbed the newly added container handling capacity.
