A digital replica of the supply chain on which you can run the most outlandish scenarios: that is every supply chain professional’s dream. Especially in these times of geopolitical turmoil, when one bizarre scenario after another is unfolding. It is therefore hardly surprising that Supply Chain Media’s very first Digital Twin Demo Day attracted a remarkable number of interested parties, including companies such as Burg Group and Brenntag. ‘‘Actually, as a company operating globally, we should be constantly working on scenarios, but we don’t have the tools for that.’’
Five suppliers gave participants a glimpse into their digital twins. This revealed significant differences between them, both in terms of approach and scope. For example, the experts from Sophus demonstrated how their digital twin can be used to address production planning issues. Which products should I have manufactured on which production line at what time? Is it worth running an extra shift? And if so, how do I ensure that this extra shift is utilised to the full?
In the next room, 4Flow is demonstrating how companies can use their digital twin to resolve issues with the supply of goods. Is a supplier experiencing production problems, or is a port closed due to a strike? The planner is shown which scenario is best: do nothing, use air freight, or switch to another supplier. Whichever scenario they choose, an AI agent can execute it without human intervention.
