ZET Scale, a shipper alliance, just placed the largest electric truck order in US history: 2,500 Tesla Class 8 trucks. Cristiano Façanha from Smart Freight Centre explains how this demand aggregation program is breaking the market’s “chicken and egg” problem by making electric trucks cost-competitive with diesel, driving the industry towards a more sustainable future. Learn how major shippers are pooling demand to unlock scale and accelerate decarbonization.
A shipper alliance called Z-Scale has placed an order for 2,500 electric Class 8 trucks, selecting Tesla as the primary supplier in what the program calls the largest electric truck order in U.S. history. The volume is nearly enough to double the number of battery-electric Class 8 trucks currently operating on U.S. roads, according to Cristiano Façanha, head of Road Freight Electrification North America at Smart Freight Centre.
Z-Scale — short for Zero Emission Truck Shipper Carrier Alliance Leading Electrification — is jointly run by Smart Freight Centre and Catalyst Mobility. It pools demand from major shippers including PepsiCo, Microsoft, IKEA, and Red Bull to send a large-scale purchasing signal to truck manufacturers, enabling OEMs to price at volumes they have never before seen. The program’s total goal is 10,000 trucks, a threshold Façanha said the alliance believes will make the electric truck market self-sustaining, with the 2,500-unit first tranche representing round one of that buildout.
