Essar Ports has secured a LoA from Deendayal Port Authority) to build a multipurpose cargo terminal at Tuna Tekra, Kandla, Gujarat, under a 30-year build-operate-transfer concession, said Ashish Rajgarhia, CEO, Essar Ports. The project is estimated at Rs. 2,276 crore, with Essar investing Rs. 1,552 crore, and DPA contributing Rs, 723 crore. The terminal is planned to handle over 18 million tonnes of cargo annually across four 300-metre berths, providing a combined berth length of 1,200 metres. It will accommodate vessels of up to 170,000 deadweight tonnes, with a draft of up to 18 metres. DPA will provide shared infrastructure, including dredging of access channels, berth pockets, and turning circles, as well as an approach road. The added capacity is likely to ease pressure on existing dry-cargo berths, which are operating above 90 per cent occupancy.
