Taiwanese carrier Evergreen Marine has announced that it currently operates “approximately 58,000 reefer containers, all equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) technology, turning each container into a smart, connected node capable of sensing conditions and transmitting data in real time.”
The bulk of Evergreen’s reefer fleet is equipped with reefer machinery from Carrier Transicold. Evergreen also operates a smaller number of Star Cool reefers from Maersk Container Industry (MCI), which are remotely monitored through MCI’s Sekstant platform.
“Through IoT technology, Evergreen can monitor each reefer container’s location, temperature, humidity, and operating status around the clock. If a temperature deviation, unauthorised door opening, or equipment malfunction occurs, the system immediately issues an alert, enabling personnel to quickly assess the situation and take appropriate action. Greater transparency transforms cold chain management from conventional post-event inspection into end-to-end visibility, real-time exception detection, and proactive risk control, further enhancing the transportation security of high-value perishable cargo,” Evergreen said.
