FS Logistix orders six more Czech locomotives amid €1bn fleet renewal

Italian rail freight group FS Logistix has ordered six diesel-electric EffiShunter 1000 locomotives from Czech manufacturer CZ LOKO, bringing its total orders for the model to 18 as it expands and modernises its fleet under a €1 billion investment programme.

The order, announced on 26 October, was placed through subsidiary Mercitalia Shunting & Terminal. It is the group’s fourth purchase of EffiShunters, with the existing 12 locomotives deployed mainly for shunting at freight yards and terminals across northern Italy.

The four-axle EffiShunter 1000 has an output of 895 kW and a top speed of 100 km/h. Designed for heavy shunting on industrial sidings as well as mainline freight operations, it can haul trains weighing more than 2,000 tonnes at low speeds on gentle gradients.

FS Logistix CEO Sabrina De Filippis said the latest order would help the group “leverage economies of scale in rolling stock management”. Essentially, by continuing to purchase the same model, the operator can build on established maintenance arrangements with CZ LOKO Italia, which already services its existing fleet.
