For the third time, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has extended a pause on the state’s motor fuel excise tax to provide relief to motorists ahead of Thanksgiving travel. The suspension of Georgia’s current per-gallon motor fuel excise tax of 37.3 cents for diesel and 33.3 cents for gasoline extends through Nov. 30. “With a major holiday coming up and fuel prices still at high levels, I am proud to take this step to keep more money in Georgians’ pockets,” Kemp said Oct. 24. “Our commitment to fiscal responsibility and stewarding taxpayer dollars has allowed us to act when needed, whether by suspending the gas tax or returning billions to taxpayers through income tax refunds and property tax relief.” Diesel averaged $5.69 a gallon in Georgia as of Oct. 26, according to AAA. That was 11% below the national average but 44% higher than a year earlier. Kemp extended the motor fuel tax suspension through a third executive order continuing the state of emergency over petroleum supply disruptions and global market volatility. The governor’s directive noted he consulted with state economic officials to determine that continuing the order was needed “to protect the continued strength of Georgia’s economy and provide for the health, safety and welfare of Georgia’s residents and visitors.” Kemp first issued the emergency order Sept. 28 and extended it Oct. 6 before issuing the latest order Oct. 24.
