Hanwha Power Gets ABS Approval for Battery-Powered Boxship Design
The 1,700 TEU container ship design uses containerised battery units that can be handled like standard cargo containers.
Hanwha Power has received approval in principle (AiP) from the classification society ABS for its design of a 1,700 TEU battery-powered container ship.
The vessel will use a 151 MWh battery system for fully electric propulsion, with batteries charged at port, the firm said in an announcement today.
The design uses containerised battery units that can be handled like standard cargo containers, allowing flexible replacement and more efficient use of onboard space.
The ship is designed for zero-direct-emission operations, targeting short-sea and regional container transport.
