Hapag-Lloyd aims to increase its annual container transport volume in Africa to 1.7 million TEU by 2030, as the German shipping company continues to expand its operations across the continent.
The carrier announced that its African transport volumes surpassed 1 million TEU for the first time in 2026. The milestone reflects the company’s growing presence in a market it considers central to its long-term expansion strategy.
Hapag-Lloyd currently serves 27 African countries. Meanwhile, the company is marking 20 years of operations in South Africa, one of its most established markets on the continent.
Hapag-Lloyd opened its first dedicated office in South Africa in 2006. Since then, it has expanded its local operations and customer network. Today, the company employs 52 people in the country.
