The world’s largest ammonia-powered vessel, measuring 230 meters in length and 36.5 meters in width, has made its debut in Ulsan. HD Hyundai Heavy Industries held a naming ceremony for the 93,000-cubic-meter very large ammonia-powered carrier Terra Clove at its Ulsan shipyard on Oct. 22.
The vessel is the first of two sister ships that HD Hyundai Heavy Industries won in an order from Singapore-based EPS in 2023. The name Terra Clove combines “Terra,” the Latin word for earth, and “Clove,” meaning flower bud, reflecting environmentally friendly values. About 110 officials attended the event to celebrate the launch of the new vessel, including Lee Sang-kyun, Vice Chairman and Head of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries, EPS CEO Cyril Ducau, and Loh Koon Yen, chairman of the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore.
At the core of Terra Clove is its ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system. The vessel was designed to selectively use conventional marine fuel oil and ammonia, an eco-friendly fuel, depending on operating conditions. In particular, it incorporates advanced disaster-prevention technologies, including a real-time ammonia leak detection device and an emission reduction system, securing safety, the biggest challenge for ammonia-powered ships.
