Ongoing capacity reductions across the trucking industry are finally bearing fruit for Heartland Express (CCJ Top 250, No. 28), helping the carrier swing back to positive net income for the third quarter of 2026.

While the North Liberty-based carrier reported operating revenue of $179.5 million ($1 million net income) for the quarter ended September 30—down from $196.5 million in the same period of 2025—tightening industry capacity drove stronger freight volumes and improved customer pricing.

Those dynamics fueled a notable 500-basis-point improvement in the company's operating ratio, which dropped to 98.7% from 103.7% in the third quarter of 2025.

Chief Executive Officer Mike Gerdin emphasized that capacity-driven market shifts are actively reshaping the company’s financial trajectory, even as long-term contract negotiations continue to unfold.
