Rep. John Garamendi speaks outside the U.S. Capitol during a press conference with lawmakers, labor leaders and maritime industry representatives urging passage of the SHIPS for America Act, legislation aimed at revitalizing U.S. shipbuilding and the maritime industrial base.
A bipartisan group of 119 lawmakers is urging congressional leaders to preserve and expand provisions of the SHIPS for America Act in the final fiscal year 2027 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), warning that rebuilding the U.S. maritime industry is essential to national and economic security.
In an October 29 letter to House and Senate leadership, the lawmakers called for retaining shipbuilding provisions already approved by the House while considering additional measures from the broader legislation that were left out.
The letter was led by Representatives Trent Kelly (R-MS) and John Garamendi (D-CA), along with Senators Todd Young (R-IN) and Mark Kelly (D-AZ), the bipartisan sponsors of the SHIPS for America Act.
