A new study by the University of Sheffield reports that 35% of self-employed parcel delivery drivers surveyed estimate they earn less than the national minimum wage.
The report, Work and Employment in UK Last Mile Parcel Delivery, draws on a survey of 1,413 car and van drivers who are members of two recognized trade unions, plus interviews with 47 delivery workers and 38 union officials. It compares two unnamed parcel delivery companies: one mainly employs its drivers directly within collective bargaining arrangements, while the other relies mainly on self-employed drivers.
