The Port of Hueneme is developing a new container export initiative targeting agricultural shipments from California to Asian markets, as the port seeks to diversify cargo activity following a decline in automobile volumes.
The initiative was outlined during the port’s 2026 State of the Port presentation, held in late October and detailed in an announcement issued on 2 November.
According to the port, automobile volumes fell by 13% during the latest fiscal year, with tariffs contributing to the decline. However, higher high-and-heavy cargo volumes and a slight increase in container imports helped support its overall financial performance.
The proposed export initiative aims to use available container capacity to transport agricultural products from Ventura County to Asian markets. The port has not disclosed a launch date, expected shipment volumes or specific shipping partners.
