The Port of Los Angeles has completed work on its $139 million State Route 47 interchange project, designed to improve the flow of traffic around the shipping hub.
As part of the project, the port relocated the southbound SR 47 highway off-ramp from the south to the north side of the Vincent Thomas Bridge, reconfigured freeway ramps, added new turning and through lanes at Harbor Boulevard, and added a new lane providing direct access to the West Basin Container Terminal. With those improvements, commercial truck and passenger vehicle traffic can now be separated, while providing safer, more efficient access to port facilities and surrounding communities.
“This project is about keeping people and cargo moving safely and efficiently through one of the busiest transportation corridors in our Port complex,” said Port of Los Angeles Executive Director Gene Seroka in an October 29 release.
The Port of Los Angeles also celebrated the completion of three beautification projects totaling more than $18 million, which added new landscaping and multi-use paths neighboring the West Basin Container Terminal. Although SR 47 interchange work has been officially completed, a new Harbor Boulevard off-ramp will remain closed ahead of a separate deck replacement project for the Vincent Thomas Bridge starting on November 7. The bridge will also be closed for 16 months as part of that project.
