Indian Railways will bring changes to container freight operations to make rail more attractive for exporters, including shorter rakes and expanded hub-and-spoke terminals, railways officials said. Under the proposal, eligible containerised export shipments may be exempt from mandatory 100 per cent weighment, with operators submitting Verified Gross Mass data, and random checks continuing 5 per cent of rakes. The transporter plans mini container rakes of at least 25 wagons, compared with the standard 45, to accommodate higher-value cargo that may not fill a full train. It is considering allowing private firms maintain flatbed wagons. More hub-and-spoke terminals could help operators consolidate containers from multiple locations while retaining long-distance tariff benefits.
