SBB Cargo Switzerland will withdraw all 21 of its Re 484 locomotives at the December timetable change, as its new single-wagonload model reduces the number of mainline locomotives it needs. The fleet, approved for operation in Switzerland and Italy, will then be offered for sale internationally.
The Bombardier Traxx locomotives will leave service when SBB Cargo introduces a leaner single-wagonload network on 13 December 2026, cutting around 50 low-demand service points and concentrating traffic on better-utilised trains.
SBB says the revised network will still handle around 98% of current wagon volumes but will require fewer locomotives and staff, making the 21-strong Re 484 fleet surplus to requirements. The locomotives, which are approved for operation in Switzerland and Italy, will then be offered for sale on the international market.
Their withdrawal continues a broader reduction in locomotive types at SBB Cargo. The operator has already phased out its Re 474 and Re 482 subfleets in an effort to simplify operations and maintenance and reduce spending on spare parts and training.
