Diana Shipping, Fender and Cambiaso Risso, in partnership with the Hellenic Marine Environment Protection Association and SPAZZAPNEA promoted a volunteer sea and seabed cleanup initiative in Athens (Voula Beach), bringing together employees and international organizations in a shared effort to protect the marine environment.
Inspired by HELMEPA’s long-standing mission “To Save the Seas” through environmental education, volunteer engagement and marine litter prevention, and by Spazzapnea’s hands-on commitment to removing waste from coastlines and seabeds, the initiative aims to transform environmental responsibility into tangible results.
Participants worked side by side to collect litter from both the shoreline and underwater areas, helping to restore the natural beauty of the local marine ecosystem while raising awareness of the impact of waste on biodiversity and ocean health.
Inspired by the successful format developed by SPAZZAPNEA event in Italy, participants took part in a friendly environmental competition. Volunteers have been divided into teams and challenged to collect as much marine litter as possible from the seabed and shoreline within a designated time. Divers and freedivers recovered waste from underwater areas, while shore teams removed litter from beaches and coastal zones for a total of 147 kilos. At the end of the activity, all collected items have been sorted, weighed and recorded. Points have been awarded based on both the quantity and type of waste collected. The challenge is not only about the amount of litter removed, but also about raising awareness of marine pollution and demonstrating how collective action can have a positive impact on the environment.
