Allseas has completed the transport and installation of two offshore substations and their foundations for the OST-6-1 grid connection in the German Baltic Sea, using its heavy lift vessel Pioneering Spirit. The substations, named Zingst and Darß, were supplied by a joint venture involving Smulders HSM and Iv, under a contract covering engineering, procurement, construction, installation and commissioning.

Both substations and their suction bucket jacket foundations were installed at the Skyborn-operated Gennaker wind farm in a single campaign. Allseas also used its jacket lift system to install the substation topsides, as well as the foundations, adapting the installation method to the site’s shallow-water conditions.

The OST-6-1 connection is being developed by German transmission system operator 50Hertz to link the Gennaker facility to the grid. Located around 15 km off Germany’s Darß peninsula, Gennaker is planned to have a capacity of more than 900 MW, supplying electricity to around one million households.

The project forms part of Germany’s expansion of offshore wind power in the Baltic Sea, where shallow-water conditions can influence the choice of installation vessel and methods.
