USA: The American Short Line & Regional Railroad Association has been awarded an FY25-26 Consolidated Rail Infrastructure & Safety Improvements grant to expand and enhance the workforce development training provided by its Short Line Training Center.

The $5.6m grant will be supported by a 25% match from ASLRRA. Over a six-year period this will fund a minimum of 24 industry-specific instructor-led and computer-based training programmes; support delivery of up to 48 in-person seminars; and enable acquisition and implementation of cutting-edge technology to enhance course delivery,

The Short Line Training Center was originally funded by a FY20 CRISI Grant to the Iowa Northern Railway Co with ASLRRA as the primary contractor. Training is available to all short line railroads and contractors, and the project has already provided safety, compliance and regulatory training to nearly 2 000 short line employees through in-person and online courses.

Facilities include a mobile technical training center equipped with two ocomotive simulators, classroom space for six students, a customised online learning management system; and 30 instructor-led and computer based training programmes.
