The U.S. Department of Transportation said on Tuesday it will provide US$498 million in grants for 35 port infrastructure projects across 19 states as part of efforts to upgrade facilities and strengthen supply-chain capacity.
The funding is being awarded through the Maritime Administration’s Port Infrastructure Development Program (PIDP).
“The strength of our nation’s economy is directly tied to the state of our ports,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy. “This nearly half-billion-dollar investment will deliver critical upgrades to ports across America so we can enhance supply chains, lower shipping costs, and create good-paying jobs for hardworking Americans. Under President Trump, America’s maritime dominance is coming back stronger than ever.”
The United States has more than 300 ports operated by state and local governments and private companies, according to the Transportation Department.
