Wärtsilä has completed engine conversions on three LNG carriers operated by Chevron Transport Corporation, marking the first phase of a project aimed at reducing methane emissions from LNG-powered vessels.

The work involved converting one Wärtsilä 50DF engine on each vessel from dual-fuel operation to spark gas technology. The modification is designed to reduce methane slip, which occurs when unburned methane escapes during engine operation.

Following the completion of these three conversions, Wärtsilä and Chevron plan to carry out similar upgrades on three additional LNG carriers during the remainder of 2026 and in 2027.

The programme will cover six vessels once all planned conversions are completed.
