Maersk has become the first international shipping line to procure an export-import (EXIM) shipping container manufactured in India, marking a milestone for the country’s maritime manufacturing sector.
The first container was unveiled at the Maersk and Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) joint-venture Inland Container Depot in Dadri, Uttar Pradesh, in the presence of India’s Union Minister for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal.
The achievement follows a 16-month collaboration that began in February 2025 after Maersk Chairman Robert Maersk Uggla met Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modiwho encouraged the company to support the development of container manufacturing in India.
Maersk said the container has successfully passed all structural, safety and weatherproofing tests required under ISO standards and the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC), receiving full CSC certification. The company worked closely with India’s DCM Shriram Groupsharing its technical expertise to ensure the container met Maersk’s global quality standards.
The project has also benefited from India’s proposed INR 10,000 crore Production Linked Incentive (PLI) programme announced in the 2026 Union Budget, which aims to strengthen domestic container manufacturing and support the country’s Maritime Vision 2030 and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.
