Sarens strengthens its Mozambique fleet with 400-tonne crawler crane to support major energy and infrastructure projects

Sarens has strengthened its presence in Mozambique with the addition of a 400-tonne crawler crane, the XGC400-1, to support the country’s growing demand for complex lifting solutions across power generation, oil & gas, LNG, and large-scale infrastructure projects.

The investment comes at a time when Mozambique is accelerating major developments in energy and infrastructure. The country’s construction sector is projected to grow at an average annual rate of 4.8 per cent through 2029, driven by oil & gas investments, power generation projects, port expansion, and strategic infrastructure programmes.

For Sarens, the addition of the XGC400-1 reinforces its ability to support critical projects that require high-capacity lifting, technical planning, and safe execution. The crane is currently working in Temane, Inhassoro, Mozambique, on the gas-fired power plant project for Globeleq / CTT, Central Térmica de Temane SA. The project is a crucial development for Mozambique’s energy infrastructure and reflects the growing need for reliable lifting solutions in the country’s power generation sector.

The XGC400-1 crawler crane offers exceptional versatility, with multiple boom configurations and a maximum lifting height exceeding 140–150 metres. This makes it an ideal asset for complex lifting operations in energy and infrastructure environments, where precision, reach, and lifting capacity are essential.

Mozambique’s energy sector is entering an important phase of development. The expansion of LNG activities, combined with the increasing demand for reliable electricity, is accelerating the development of power plants and associated transmission infrastructure. In March 2025, the Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy announced a strategic plan to triple renewable energy capacity to 600MW by 2030, reinforcing the country’s ambition to strengthen its role as a key energy hub in Southern Africa.

Another key development is the expansion of the Port of Maputo, a strategic infrastructure investment valued at MZN 133.2 billion, approximately USD 2.1 billion, with MZN 38.8 billion to be invested over the next three years. The project will enhance logistics capabilities for oil & gas operations, power plant equipment, and large industrial components, further strengthening Mozambique’s position as a regional energy and trade hub.

With the addition of the XGC400-1, Sarens now operates 20 crawler cranes across Southern and Western Africa. This expanded fleet underlines the company’s long-term commitment to supporting critical energy infrastructure, including thermal and renewable power plants, oil & gas developments, and major industrial projects.

Beyond equipment, Sarens continues to contribute to local employment and skills development, combining global engineering expertise with local operational capabilities.

According to João Custódio, Country Manager of Sarens Mozambique: “Our continued investment in high-capacity equipment reflects our commitment to supporting Mozambique’s energy transition and industrial growth. The deployment of the XGC400-1 on the Temane gas-fired power plant project demonstrates how Sarens is supporting critical energy infrastructure in Mozambique with the right equipment, expertise, and local operational capabilities.”
