The Polish infrastructure programme Port Polska and rail freight operator PKP Cargo have signed a letter of intent to cooperate on rail freight development. As Poland works on its multimodal infrastructure projects, PKP Cargo will be advocating for the needs of freight.
PKP Cargo’s involvement aims to ensure that new railways, terminals and logistics facilities will meet the requirements of rail freight from the outset. The flagship Port Polska projects are a new airport between Warsaw and Łódź, as well as a high-speed rail network, but freight is not being left out.
“Modern infrastructure is designed in partnership with those who will use it. That is why we want to benefit from the experience of freight operators from the earliest planning stage. This will ensure that the infrastructure we build serves all participants in the market effectively,” commented Dr. Filip Czernicki, CEO of Centralny Port Komunikacyjny, which delivers Port Polska.
PKP Cargo and Port Polska will be working together on intermodal freight development and freight traffic management. They will also determine the locations of freight terminals and rail sidings.
A new era for Polish logistics
“The Port Polska project is one of the most significant infrastructure investments in Poland and will permanently transform the country’s transport network”, commented Zbigniew Prus, President of the Management Board of PKP Cargo.
“For PKP Cargo, a company of strategic importance to the Polish economy with extensive experience in domestic and international freight transport, it is essential that appropriate conditions for the development of rail freight services — particularly intermodal transport — are built into the project from the planning stage.”
The letter of intent will enable the full potential of the Port Polska investment to be realised for the benefit of the economy and the logistics sector, according to Prus.
