Navigator Gas JV selects Wärtsilä ammonia engines for two new gas carriers

A joint venture between Navigator Gas and Amon Maritime has selected Wärtsilä’s Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia auxiliary engine for two new 51,350-cbm LPG/liquid ammonia carriers.

The vessels are under construction at Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (SOE) in Shanghai for Navigator Amon Shipping AS.

Wärtsilä will supply the Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine, a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, a gas valve unit (GVU) and a Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) system.

The package will improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. It will also help the vessels meet future environmental regulations.

Wärtsilä launched the maritime industry’s first commercially available four-stroke ammonia engine in 2023. When operating on sustainable ammonia, the engine can cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 90% compared with a conventional diesel engine.

“Wärtsilä has demonstrated industry-leading capabilities in enabling future low and zero-carbon fuels,” said Kaj S. Pilemand, Director of Vessel Operations at Navigator Gas. “We expect the Wärtsilä 25 Ammonia engine to significantly reduce the vessels’ environmental impact while supporting compliance with future regulations.”

Wärtsilä said its propulsion system integrates the complete shaft line to maximize efficiency, improve reliability and lower emissions.

“This project reflects the growing momentum behind ammonia as a zero-carbon marine fuel,” said Stefan Nysjö, Vice President of Power Supply at Wärtsilä Marine. “Our solutions will support the vessels’ lower-emission operations.”
