Wagenborg and Carisbrooke to build up to 10 ice-class vessels

Wagenborg will expand its multipurpose fleet through a partnership with Carisbrooke Shipping. The companies plan to build up to 10 new 7,400 dwt Ice Class 1A vessels.

The investment supports Wagenborg’s fleet renewal strategy. The company aims to improve efficiency, reliability and fleet standardization.

Dajin Heavy Industries in China will build the vessels. Groot Ship Design developed the design. Most of the equipment will come from European suppliers.

The first eight vessels will be delivered between the third quarter of 2027 and early 2029. The agreement also includes options for two more vessels, scheduled for delivery in mid-2029.

Each vessel will have a deadweight of about 7,400 tonnes. The newbuildings will replace older ships and modernize the fleet.

Carisbrooke will manage the vessels’ technical operations and crews. Wagenborg will oversee commercial management and chartering.

“We are delighted to partner with Wagenborg on this important fleet expansion,” said Helen Tveitan, CEO of Carisbrooke Shipping. “By combining our technical and crewing expertise with Wagenborg’s strong commercial platform, we are creating a solid foundation for long-term operational excellence.”

The new vessels will strengthen Wagenborg’s position in the Baltic. The company said they will increase transport capacity, improve flexibility and enhance service reliability.

“This step confirms our strategy to strengthen our position in the markets where our customers depend on us most,” said Edwin de Vries, Managing Director of Wagenborg Shipping. “We are pleased to cooperate with Carisbrooke to build a fleet that delivers reliability, efficiency and long-term value to industrial supply chains.”

The vessels will measure 110.08 metres in length and 15.45 metres in beam. They will have a summer draft of 6.5 metres, a cargo volume of 351,730 cubic feet and an installed power of 2,190 kW.
