GTI Launches First Double-Stack Rail Service

Gateway Terminals India (GTI), also known as APM Terminals Mumbai, has handled its first double-stack rake operation, creating a new rail corridor to India’s inland markets through the Dedicated Freight Corridor. The milestone gives customers direct access to the National Capital Region while improving the speed and efficiency of inland cargo movement.

The inaugural service to Dadri moved 270 TEUs in seven hours, including 90 TEUs discharged and 180 TEUs loaded. GTI said the operation marks a new benchmark for rail productivity and reflects the terminal’s ability to handle larger cargo volumes more efficiently.

Bigger reach for cargo

The move also brings GTI into the Dedicated Freight Corridor ecosystem, strengthening connectivity between Nhava Sheva and major consumption and manufacturing centres in northern India. By enabling double-stack container movement, the terminal can support faster evacuation of cargo from the port and improve multimodal logistics.

Industry stakeholders view the development as another step toward more sustainable freight handling, since rail-based movement can reduce congestion and improve cargo flow across the network. The service is expected to support higher throughput as demand grows for rail-linked port logistics.
