A Aena won the concession auction Tom Jobim International Airport (Galeão) with a bid of R$2.9 billion, consolidating its position as one of the main airport operators in Brazil. The company, which already manages other airports in the country, expands its portfolio and reinforces its expansion strategy in the Brazilian market. With the victory in the auction, Aena is committed to investing in the modernization of infrastructure, improving the passenger experience and expanding air connectivity.
Galeão has faced, in recent years, a significant drop in passenger movement, mainly impacted by competition with Santos Dumont Airport and changes in the post-pandemic airline sector. The expectation is that the new management will implement measures to attract new routes, especially international ones, in addition to strengthening the airport as a logistics hub.
The federal government highlighted that the concession is part of a broader plan to strengthen airport infrastructure in the country, encouraging the participation of the private sector in the management of strategic assets. The initiative seeks to increase operational efficiency and boost the economic development of the state of Rio de Janeiro.
Experts point out that Aena’s international experience can be a differentiator in repositioning Galeão on the global stage, increasing its competitiveness compared to other large Brazilian airports, such as São Paulo/Guarulhos International Airport.
The new concession is seen as an opportunity to revitalize the airport, which has historically played a fundamental role in connecting Brazil with the outside world.
