The Port of Gothenburg has increased yard capacity at Arken Intermodal Terminal by rebuilding and streamlining its railway track layout. The changes have freed up additional space for cargo handling.
Arken Intermodal Terminal is one of Sweden’s largest intermodal terminals and an important hub for transfers between rail, road and sea. Cargo volumes in the area have increased over time, bringing capacity for certain flows close to its limit. Yard space has been a particular constraint.
“Five per cent more space has given us almost twice the yard capacity,” says Carl Johan Andersson, Senior Logistics Developer at the Port of Gothenburg.
The redevelopment involved rebuilding one of the terminal’s through tracks, freeing up approximately 4,000 square metres of valuable yard space for trailers and other units.
