Morocco starts operations at first container terminal at Nador West Med
Morocco's East Container Terminal at Nador West Med began operations on Saturday, with Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan ceremonially launching the unloading of the first container from a commercial vessel.
MSC’s terminal operating arm, Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), has kicked off operations at the East Container Terminal at Morocco’s Nador West Med port through West Med Container Terminal (WMCT), its joint venture with Moroccan port operator Marsa Maroc.
On instructions from King Mohammed VI, Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan gave the starting signal for the first container-unloading operation from a commercial vessel, marking the terminal’s entry into service. The vessel present for the October 31 inauguration has been identified in local media as MSC Genova. The 366-metre container ship arrived from Barcelona and is heading to Las Palmas, Spain.
According to local media reports, MSC Group president Diego Aponte attended the ceremony, describing Nador West Med as a major project that would strengthen Morocco’s position as a maritime hub. He said the terminal could accommodate container ships of up to 24,000 TEU.
The terminal had already undergone operational testing before the formal ceremony, including trials involving MSC Nita in September.
